European Youth Media Days 2015

Media freedom is one of the cornerstones in the development of democratic societies in Europe and has become a constitutional guarantee in many European states since WWII as well as one of the fundamental rules in modern European Union. However, not all EU Member States score the best in media freedom watch and reports from ONG or human rights watchdogs, and media and journalists' liberties are an even more delicate issue in several EU neighbouring countries.

If these are topics that interest you, we invite you to apply to become one of the 77 young journalists, aged between 18 and 30, reporting from the European Parliament in Brussels between October 20 and 22, 2015.

The European Youth Media Days 2015 (which are organised by the European Parliament in collaboration with the European Youth Press – Network of young media makers), will focus on Media Freedom in Europe and beyond. The EYMD is one of the biggest events in Europe dedicated to young journalists.

Participants will experience three days of media workshops, political discussions, hands-on media production and invaluable insights into the European Parliament and international media milieu. They will interact with high-level European politicians, professional journalists and experts and engage in intercultural exchange through practical media production.

Over the course of the three-day workshop, each young journalist will work to produce a report on the topic of the seminar through their medium of choice - video, photo, radio, print, or multimedia. Participants at print, multimedia and photo workshops, furthermore, will have the chance to work in mixed groups and produce a 360° journalistic content. This year’s edition brings one more innovation: three participants will produce a short documentary movie about the whole event. The EYMD are open to young journalists who are citizens or legal residents of the EU Member States and neighbouring countries.

Costs – citizens or legal residents of the EU Members States

Participants’ travel costs (specific conditions apply, more information will be given after you have been selected) will be reimbursed by the European Parliament 1 to 2 weeks after the event, upon submission of all necessary documents (forms for completion and instructions will be sent by the European Parliament prior to the event). The European Parliament will also pay up to 360 Euros lump sum to working journalists (who need to provide a copy of their valid press card or a letter of instruction from their editor stating that they work as a paid journalist) or up to 180 Euros lump sum to journalism students or interns (who need to provide proof (e.g. in the form of a letter) from their university or from the organisation they are interning at) to cover accommodation, meals and local transport. The lump sums will be paid at the same time as the travel reimbursement, 1 to 2 weeks after the event.

Attention: for participants living in Brussels no lump sum or travel cost will be paid.

The young journalists chosen to participate will have to arrange their own accommodation and travel and provide the necessary documents to the European Parliament for reimbursement.

Costs – citizens or legal residents of the EU neighbouring countries

Participants’ travel costs (up to 250 Euros, specific conditions apply, more information will be given after you have been selected) will be reimbursed by the European Youth Press 2 weeks after the event, upon submission of all necessary documents (reimbursement form will be sent by the EYP prior to the event). The European Youth Press will also pay up to 250 Euros in total to team members involved in the project to cover accommodation and meals in Brussels. They need to provide originals of the corresponding documents (receipts, invoices) and EYP reimbursement form. The lump sums will be paid at the same time with the travel reimbursement, 2 weeks after the event. Participants will have to arrange their own travel. European Youth Press will assist with finding the accommodation in Brussels. Team members are responsible to provide the European Youth Press with all necessary documents requested for reimbursement.

Application and deadline

The call is open to young journalists aged between 18 and 30 who are citizens or legal residents of a EU Member State or neighbouring country only. The event will be held in English, so a working level of the language is required. Participants applying for the documentary workshop need to demonstrate experience in documentary filmmaking or video-reporting as well as to bring the camera and editing software (the movie has to be finished until December 22, 2015).

thisisFINLAND Foreign Correspondents’ Programme

Would you like to come to Finland this August and spend three weeks learning more about the country, Finnish society and the Finnish way of life? The Ministry for Foreign Affairs has organized thisisFINLAND Foreign Correspondents’ Programme since 1990. The programme is a media training programme targeted for young international journalists.  The programme provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about Finland, Finnish society and the Finnish way of life. It includes briefings on various subjects, meetings with Finnish professionals and visits to business enterprises, cultural sites and institutions.

In 2015, thisisFINLAND Foreign Correspondents’ Programme will be organized on 10-28 August.

Who’s eligible?

This year’s Foreign Correspondents’ Programme is definitely for you, if you are:

1. An aspiring journalist with some work experience in a media house (TV, print or web) or in social media, for example an accomplished blogger or vlogger;
2. A citizen or permanent resident of the following countries: Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Republic of Korea, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, United Kingdom, United States;
3. Born between 1986 and 1995;
4. Able to work and communicate fluently in English;
5. Interested in learning new things, meeting people from different cultures and spending three weeks in a foreign country;
6. Excited to become a lifelong friend of Finland!

What does the programme include?

The Foreign Correspondents’ Programme starts on 10 August and ends on 28 August 2015. The programme is intensive, and includes briefings on various subjects, meetings with Finnish professionals and visits to business enterprises, cultural sites and institutions. It also includes a weekend stay as the guest of a Finnish family.

The programme provides an excellent opportunity to learn more about Finland, Finnish society and the Finnish way of life. It also offers the means to enhance your professional skills, as well as expand your network of professional colleagues and international friends.

What costs are covered?

The scholarship covers the costs of travel to and from Finland, local travel in Helsinki, accommodation and the daily programme, including transportation and some meals. The programme does not cover medical insurance, per diem allowance or meals not listed as part of the programme.

Advanced Training for a Young Journalist, Italy

The Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism offers short-term fellowships to help make better use of new online tools and channels. GEO-5 Travel award for journalists and bloggers

Savewater! International Photography Competition

In its sixth year, the Savewater! photography competition calls both aspiring and professional photographers to get snapping and capture the value of water in an image. The competition is designed to recognize creative talent by capturing imagery that depicts the value of water as the key focus. World Perspectives: Minority Voices

World Perspectives: Minority Voices – a conference for young media makers that will take place in Budapest, Hungary, on 22-28 April, 2013 – will bring together 26 young media makers, from across Europe, to study how the international news media portrays issues affecting minorities, migrants and refugees. Participants will learn through practice based training, to critically analyse different forms of news media and also to further develop their own skills to more effectively participate in the creation of responsible media. In particular, the study session will motivate and enable young media makers to develop strategies to ensure minorities, migrants and refugees are themselves able to influence how issues affecting them are portrayed in the news.

Project Aim

The project aims to support civil society in the participants’ countries by raising their awareness about biased information presented in mass media and developing their competences as young media makers.

After the study session, participants will:

• Have greater awareness of issues affecting minorities, migrants and refugees in Europe.
• Know how to recognise and quantify biases that appear in the media and in political discourse.
• Be able to apply improved media and journalistic skills to develop responsible and balanced news media.
• Be able to develop improved strategies to ensure the participation of minority, migrant and refugee communities within mainstream media.

The study session will also seek to work with participants to establish a platform for young media makers in Europe, working on issues relating to minorities. As well as develop networking opportunities between young media makers.

Participant Profile

The study session is planned for 26 participants. This call is open to legal residents in countries which are members of the Council of Europe. We aim to give priority to participants from the following countries: Belarus, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, the Russian Federation, Serbia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and Ukraine. Young media makers of minority backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply. Participants should be between 18-30 years old. Participants should be active or able to show a demonstrated interest in any of the following; journalism and media, working with young people, human rights, issues relating to minority, migrant and refugee communities and also the Middle East and North Africa. These can include, for example:

• Young journalists and media makers, working in the field of news media
• Representatives of civil society and youth organisations, working to involve young people in different forms of media
• Representatives of civil society organisations working on human rights issues, especially those related to minority, migrant and refugee rights
• Young leaders from minority, migrant and refugee communities, who wish to learn how to better represent their community in the media

Priority will be given to those applications from participants, who, as well as showing an active commitment to the study sessions topics, can demonstrate they are able to act as multipliers and are able to develop effective strategies to share their learning with the organisations and communities they represent.

Selection of participants will take into account both geographical and gender balance, and will seek to ensure a diverse range of participants. We actively encourage applications from participants from minority, migrant and refugee communities, in particular those from Middle East and North African backgrounds.

The language of the study session will be English; therefore participants should feel confident in working in English, including drafting articles and other media.

Financial Information

The study session is supported financially by the Council of Europe and will be held at the European Youth Centre in Budapest. International travel costs will be covered 100% and reimbursed to participants during the training. Accommodation, all meals and local transport will also be provided for in Budapest.

A 50-Euro participation fee will be charged by the European Youth Centre and will be deducted from the participant travel reimbursements. Although travel costs will be reimbursed, participants will be expected to make and book their own travel arrangements.

European Youth Media Convention

Apply now for the European Youth Media Convention, which will be held in Berlin, at the European congress Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation, from 14 until 17 April 2010!

Eligibility: young journalists and media activists.

Would you like to be part of an European media project? Have you ever imagined becoming an EU correspondent? Are you generally interested in Europe and its media landscapes? Then you should apply for the European Youth Media Convention!

The German Youth Press and European Youth Press would like to invite you to come together with 40 other young European media makers to take part of this wonderful opportunity.

As you will be a representative of your country, you will help report about local problems of minorities. In that way the congress offers you to get connected with young media makers from all across Europe.

As a participant at the convention you will talk about “Minorities in Europe” and deal with topics like homophobia or intolerance against ethnical minorities.

You will get the opportunity to listen to presentations of experts and moreover to discuss and exchange different viewpoints with them. Throughout four workshops you will create and present media products. Depending on your skills and interests you will be able to choose between print, radio, TV and photography.

The European Youth Media Convention will take part from the 14th until the 17th of April 2010. There is no participation fee. Accommodations and catering will be taken care by the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation Berlin. The travel costs will not be covered.
