International Development Youth Forum 2015

Since 2013 the International Development Youth Forum is held annually and youth with high ambition for international development get together from all over the world. Last year approximately 38 youth chosen from approximately 900 youth from 100 different countries and regions attended the Forum. Under the slogan “Design our future” the Forum seeks to achieve 3 main aims:
  • Building continuous network among youth who are interested in International Development;
  • Providing opportunity that one can broaden one’s value, knowledge, and way of thinking;
  • Creating outcome that produces new change to society.
In 2015 the IDYF will be held in Tokyo, Japan from 1st of March to 8th of March. The theme of the Forum is “Hunger x Win-Win”, aiming to figure out cutting-edge solutions for both hunger in developing countries and social problems in developed countries.


Eligibility
The International Development Youth Forum is open to young people between 18 and 28 years old from around the world.

Costs
Financial support to attend the conference will be available for young participants from developing countries. The organizers will decide the type of scholarship based on your application:
  • Fully-funded scholarship (including airplane ticket)
  • Exemption of participation fee (not including airplane ticket)
Participants who are not eligible for a scholarship are required to pay a participation fee of JPY 30,000 (approx. €200).

Application
In order to apply you must fill in the online application form and submit your essay. The theme of your essays are as follows:
  • Why do you want to participate in IDYF 2015? (100-150 words)
  • How can you contribute to IDYF 2015? (100-150 words)
  • Explain one problem in the field of development you are most concerned in, and why you are interested in it. (150-250 words)
  • Propose a solution for hunger (you must identify one cause of hunger in your answer) (150-250 words)

2015 “Governance and Development in Africa” Residential School

The annual residential school on governance and development is part of the Governance for Development in Africa programme that SOAS-University of London run in collaboration with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation. This initiative aims to contribute to and stimulate debate on governance, development, and the relationship between them. About 20 participants from a range of African countries, and representative of the academic, civil society and government sectors will gain, through this training, new ideas and knowledge on the broad issue of governance and development.

The 2015 “Governance and Development in Africa” Residential School will be held in Marrakech, Morocco, 22 to 25 March 2015. 


Eligibility

Applicants should:
  • Have at least a Masters degree in areas related to Governance or 5 years professional experiences in fields relevant to the theme of Governance and Development in Africa;
  • Have knowledge of English and French (the official language of the school is English, however some sessions will be in French).
Preference is given to applicants from North and West Africa.

Costs and Grants

The organizers will cover accommodation, meals and travel costs (economy flights).

  • One reference letter (can be email directed by referee);
  • Proposal of max 1500 words outlining research interest and/or professional background and how the applicant will benefit from attending the Residential School.

Visegrad Scholarship Program 2015-2016

The International Visegrad Fund offers Master’s and Post-Master’s schol­ar­ships awarded to selected schol­ars for peri­ods of 1 or 2 semes­ters (with the excep­tion of Master’s schol­ar­ships within the In-Coming scheme where 1– to 4-semester schol­ar­ships can be awarded).

In applying for a scholarship to the International Visegrad Fund, you can:
  • Choose any aca­d­e­mic field;
  • Study in any lan­guage (the lan­guage of instruc­tion is not limited);
  • Choose a school of your choice, i.e., study at any accred­ited pub­lic or pri­vate uni­ver­sity or any insti­tute of sci­ence acad­e­mies in the Visegrad coun­tries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, or Slovakia);
  • Study or con­duct research at Masters (MA) or Post-Masters (PhD/postdoc) levels;
  • Apply at any age—there is no age limit and one does not need to be a stu­dent when applying;
  • Choose the length of study—between 1 to 4 semes­ters (depend­ing on the program).

  • Applicants have suc­cess­fully com­pleted at least 6 semes­ters of uni­ver­sity stud­ies (applies only to MA-level applicants);

Solidarity Academy 2014

The European Solidarity Centre and New Eastern Europe are pleased to invite you to the tenth edition of the Solidarity Academy which will be held in Gdańsk from 16th to 22nd November 2014. The Solidarity Academy is an international educational project aimed at maintaining and developing the tradition of the Solidarity Movement. Looking back at the social movement of Solidarity and the peaceful socio-political changes which took place both in Poland and throughout Eastern Europe, we can find an inspiration for solving problems in today’s world. 

During the project, 15 young journalists will have an opportunity to expand their knowledge and learn skills necessary for the work of any young and ambitious journalist or a commentator/columnist who is not indifferent to issues such as geopolitics or liberation movements on both the global and the European scale. The aim of this year's Solidarity Academy is to raise awareness among young journalists about aspects of multiculturalism and solidarity with nations fighting for freedom as well as integrating young contributors to New Eastern Europe. The Solidarity Academy will help to create a space for journalists from different backgrounds to meet, share and exchange experiences and initiatives.

Workshops will be both theoretical and practical. Participants will have an opportunity to take part in shared activities but they will also be divided into smaller groups during the journalistic workshops and comfy groups. The result of the journalistic workshops will be the final publication and the debate/panel discussion - fully prepared by the participants with the support of experts. The working language of the Solidarity Academy is English. 

One of the main goals of the project is to create a programme of Solidarity Academy Graduates which will allow the participants to maintain contact and engage together in other projects. That is why, this year, the former participants of previous editions of Solidarity Academy will participate in the workshops as facilitators and assistants. 

Organizers cover the costs of travel (up to 800 zł/200 €) and the participants’ stay in Gdańsk.

International Student Festival in Trondheim 2015

International Student Festival in Trondheim (ISFiT), the world’s largest international student festival, will be held on 05-15 February 2015.

ISFiT is a non-profit organization and is brought to life with the efforts of more than 400 student volunteers. The vision of ISFiT is to create a better future for young people in the world. ISFiT is arranged every other year, and each festival has a theme related to social and political topics with international relevance. The festival is held in the city of Trondheim, Norway. Here, over 450 students from all over the world gather to attend 18 different workshops and take part in the cultural program of the festival.

The theme of ISFiT 2015 is “Corruption” and it will be subject for debate in the 18 workshops, which all have a different topic related to corruption. The festival theme will also be addressed by renowned speakers in plenary sessions during the festival. In addition to the workshops, ISFiT highlights the festival theme through a vast cultural program consisting of concerts, plenary sessions, art exhibitions, performing arts and ceremonies. The culture program offers an extensive range of events for the visiting participants, but is also available for the population of Trondheim.

Eligibility

Studnets over 18 years old can apply to participate in the festival. It is also necessary to be proficient in both written and spoken English.


Costs

ISFiT will cover your stay in Trondheim by providing accommodation and meals throughout the festival, and you will have to pay the travel expenses to and from Trondheim and visa costs.  If you have limited resources and are not able to pay for your travel expenses, you can apply for financial aid. You apply for this support when you are filling out the application form. You will have to write an essay about why you should be granted financial aid, however there is only limited amount of money to offer.

You can apply by filling out the online application form. When you apply for the festival, you also apply for one of the 18 workshops which you will attend during the whole festival. Applications will be open from 15 August 2014 until 30 September 2014.

International Youth Forum in Lutsk

On October 18-19, 2014 the Ukrainian city of Lutsk will host the II International Youth Forum-2014 that will become a meeting place for the active youth from many countries. The organizers strive to create the best working conditions for the Forum participants to exchange experience and ideas in order to create and maintain cooperation. 

During the two Forum days participants will take part in presentations, discussions, panels, workshops and indulge the Lutsk city tour. Various presentations of international funds and Ukrainian charity organizations will be a valuable initiative that will help young activists to find the financial help for their creative projects. Also the Forum encourages young leaders to take part in a contest of project ideas. The best idea will be awarded. 


The Forum organizers invited VIP-guests to share their experiences with the youth and talk in informal environment. The international Forum guests will learn about the civic sector of the Volyn region of Ukraine when attending meetings, workshops and seminars. 

Conditions of Participation: 
1. Participation in the Forum is open to non-governmental organizations around the world, initiative groups, public figures. You don’t necessarily have to be a registered institution, but you can be a group of social activists etc. 
2. Participation in the Forum is free and voluntary. 

The International Youth Forum in Lutsk is an opportunity to gain new experience and learn about new solutions for the development of your organization and establish necessary contacts for the future cooperation with other organizations. In addition, it is a good opportunity to visit the ancient Ukrainian city with nearly a thousand years of history. So, we invite youth organizations of various orientations to join the International Youth Forum in Lutsk and present your organization internationally. The Lutsk Forum will be a kind of XXI-century congress of young monarchs like back in 1429 when Lutsk hosted a congress of European monarchs.

The accommondation and meals are provided. The organizers don't cover travel costs, they are participant's personal contribution.

Sri Lanka Government Scholarships 2014/15

Applications are invited from eligible students for the award of undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships offered by the Ministry of Higher Education, Sri Lanka under the Government of Sri Lanka Presidential Scholarships for Foreign Students for the academic year 2014/15 and the courses are to commence in December 2014. Since this is a government to government scholarship program, candidates should apply for this scholarship with the recommendation of the government scholarship nominating agency (Ministry / Institution) of the respective country.

Eligibility

The scholarships are open to international students. Applicants who are citizens of another country having Sri Lankan dual citizenship are not eligible to apply.

For undergraduate applicants: 
  • Candidates with impressive results of an examination deemed equivalent to G.C.E. (Advance Level) Examination of Sri Lanka
  • Be less than 25 years of age on 15.10.2014
  • A minimum score of 525 on TOEFL or 6.0 on IELTS
For postgraduate applicants:
  • Applicants should possess a first degree from a recognized university with good academic merit to enroll a Masters degree and for PhD studies, Master/MPhil degree is required in addition to the first degree
  • Be less than 45 years of age on 15.10.2014
  • A minimum score of 550 on TOEFL or 6.5 on IELTS

Summer Academy for Young Professionals (SAYP)

The Swedish Institute is pleased to announce the possibility for young professionals to apply for participation in a new training programme arranged during 2014 in cooperation between SI and Lund University. The topic is Increased Transparency through Governance and Control in Governmental Institutions.

We welcome applications from persons working in the public administration or students on the master’s level who have a major in political sciences, public administration, journalism or economics in Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. Between 22 September and 3 October 2014, SAYP will be held as a two-week intense training session for some 30 participants, at Lund University in Sweden.

Programme outline

The Swedish Institute (SI) Summer Academy for Young Professionals (SAYP) is a training programme developed to build awareness, capacity and resilience in the practice of governance in the countries included in the EU Eastern Partnership.At the same time the focus of SAYP is to strengthen young professionals and their individual capabilities to meet the requirement of a modern governance structure.

In the SI Summer Academy for Young Professionals, the participants will also be able to expand their own contact networks and share ideas, experiences and challenges. The programme also includes possibilities to participate in follow-ups and thematic workshops afterwards, as fellows of the Swedish Institute alumni network – a vast professional and global contact network meant to keep building good practices and mutual learning processes for a sustainable future. We invite you to apply for participation in a two-week intense training session held in Sweden at Lund University.
 
Who can apply?

The programme is targeted primarily at young professionals (22-35 years old) already employed in the state structures, working with development of policy and measures to create a more transparent, resilient and efficient public administration. Applicants may desirably work within financial management/control and audit services.

Although focusing on mainly young professionals, SAYP also targets students on the master’s level who have a major in political sciences, public administration, journalism or economics.

A general requirement for any applicant is a good command of English language (the degree of proficiency should be specified in the CV) and a relevant education, consisting of at least three years of previous studies.

Eligible countries

Citizens of Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine may apply for participation. Young professionals employed in any of the above-mentioned countries but with a citizenship of another country in the Baltic Sea region are also qualified to apply. Young professionals currently not working in any of the eligible countries according to above, cannot apply.

Practical details

Participation in the programme is offered free of charge and includes, meals, accommodation and travel expenses to Sweden. Participation in the local follow-up workshops is also covered by the Swedish Institute.

How to apply?

The application is made electronically, using the SI online application portal. You need to go through the following steps in order to apply for participation in SAYP 2014:
-          Prepare your Motivation letter according to the SI template. Motivation letters in any other templates or formats are NOT valid. Make sure to read the questions in the Motivation Letter thoroughly and be specific and personal in your reasoning. Without exception, answers may not exceed the allowed number of characters (letters and spaces) for each question.
-          Prepare your Curriculum Vitae (CV) in the Europass format of maximum 3 pages. Any CV submitted in another format than the Europass will NOT be considered as valid. Additional pages will be disregarded.
-          Prepare a Letter of Reference according to the SI template. Remember that a letter of reference that is not signed will NOT be considered as valid.
-          Prepare a Case/project outline, describing an identified problem/challenge (or possibility for improvement) that you, together with your home organization have identified as important to address. It is recommended that the case is developed in collaboration between you and your closest head/director (if you are a professional) or academic supervisor (if you are a student). The case cannot exceed 2 pages in total, and must be prepared according to the instructions.
-          Apply using the SI online application portal and attach the necessary enclosures. The link to the application portal will be available on this page during the application period 4 June – 3 August 2014. Remember that an application that has not been submitted within this period will not be taken into consideration.

2nd International Summer Academy in Peace-Building & Intercultural Dialogue

Institute for Peace and Dialogue (IPD), an independent, international non-profit and non-religious institute located in Lucerne, Switzerland, is very glad to announce its next International Summer Academy in Peace-building & Intercultural Dialogue, which is going to be held in Switzerland 2014. Its image as one of the most favourable places for traveling has made it more interesting to offer an exited and comprehensive program for our participants. Our experts, who are professionals in their fields will contribute to this event, with many years of experience in peace and conflict studies.    

Nowadays unfortunately several frozen or ongoing conflicts between or within states still exist. Conflicts are different and if we look to the world mankind, how they are facing many new challenges, coupled with new dangerous situations, i.e. terrorist acts, non-legal arming of conflict sides, re-determination of borders, establishing new countries in the world map, non-providing territorial integrity, trafficking of arms, drugs and human; disputes on the implementation of transnational energy projects, democratization and false elections, revolution and internal political conflicts, armed guerrilla movements, violation and discrimination by nationalists, world economic crisis, climate change and unsafely biodiversity etc. Unfortunately the list is long. Conflicts are related and an integral part of human beings, as conflicts cause violation of human rights. 

Existing conflicts weaken every kind of cooperation between nations and states. Without mutual cooperation and understanding, the future prosperity of the region would remain only as a good dream. Taking into consideration of peaceful behavior and engagements, we can make a decision on the strict belief, that opportunities for solving conflicts are feasible. 

Because in every conflict situation and tension forms we consequently face the below mentioned common situations:
1. Desperate situation and non-solving problems are not eternal;
2. It is possible to make common decision which both sides;
3. We can find common values, traditions and similar situation among conflict parties;
4. Protracted conflicts on the same time endanger regional development and prosperity;
5. Any mediation and negotiation actions are better than nothing.

Main Goal 
The main goal of the international summer academy is to support institutional academic peace education and strengthen peace-building skills and intercultural dialogue of the international society.

Methodology
Within the international summer academy we plan to include different workshops, lectures, presentations, interactive group works, brainstorming on conflict places, mediation operations and peace negotiation activities as well as case studies on ongoing-fragile conflicts in the world (depends experts availability).
Participants will acquire knowledge and skills from lecturers/experts who are working on peace building, mediation, negotiation, conflict transformation, intercultural dialogue and non-violence and other correspond fields at the research centers, universities, INGOs and state organs. 
In the training, both visual/dynamic methods will be used, such as schedules, tests, surveys, direct interviews, distribution of questionnaires and other methods of observation. Every expert will take 1-2 days for his lecture and workshops. We will send educational materials and daily programs of the summer academy to the selected participants.

The International Summer Academy will be held in English.

Advanced Programme in European Law and Economics 2014 in Riga

Advanced Programme in European Law and Economics for Eastern Partnership Region and Central Asia is a special 12-week full-time training programme, funded by the government of Latvia, offering education and practical knowledge transfer. The programme starts on 15 September 2014. Graduation is planned for Friday 5 December 2014.

The programme will focus on the understanding of the legal, economic and political aspects within the European Union framework, using an interdisciplinary approach that is based on both teaching and practical experience through group activities and experience-sharing study visits.

Total programme duration is 12 weeks. The programme implementation includes 2 week periods of small group courses, followed by 1 week periods with project reports and study visits.
During the 2 week periods, participants will take part in 3 courses that are taught in parallel. The weekly workload is estimated at 30 hours, with mandatory participation, and the same applies to the weeks specified for project reports and study visits.
During study visits, experience-sharing is planned with institutions such as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice, the Saeima, the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court and the Ombudsman.
Visits outside of Latvia are scheduled, such as to Brussels and Luxembourg, so as to allow for interfacing and receiving practical experience of the European Union and its Member States.
During the final period of instruction, participants will be required to submit a final programme report, based on their reflections on the theory and practice of the topics addressed during the course. The participants will be assigned a supervisor for their work on the final programme report.
English language support is offered as an elective with 2 hours per week throughout most of the course. 

Eligibility 
Public officials, as well as representatives of civil society and academia from the European Union Eastern Neighbourhood, including Eastern Partnership region and Central Asia can apply.  In 2014 the programme countries include: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan. 

Costs 
With respect to the mandatory attendance of the course activities, the programme is offered free of any cost by the Latvian Government.
Cost coverage for the participants will include travel to Riga and accommodation during the 12 week period of the programme, as well as a modest per diem for living expenses in Riga. Travel and other costs will also be covered for study visits.
Participants are expected to contribute in the form of active participation and full dedication to the programme during the 12 weeks. This year, a select group of 15 participants, will be admitted to the programme.
Courses will be taught in an intensive format over the 2 week periods, and independent work is expected during the project and study visit weeks. A final programme report will form the basis for a successful conclusion of the programme and reception of a certificate.
Participants will obtain 18 ECTS credits that may be recognised when continuing in the Masters programmes at RGSL and at other cooperating educational institutions.

SynCity 2014 Summer School

The Technische Universitat Dresden (TUD) is organizing the SynCity 2014 Summer School (September 17, 2014 – September 30, 2014). From a practical perspective and through interdisciplinary workshop formats, the summer school SynCity 2014 wants to explore how the inevitable technology push of smart technologies can be directed towards more social, human, and urban sustainable development.

The idea of "smart" and "intelligent" systems pervades all levels of urban environment. Mostly associated with ICT, cyber-physical systems, and the Internet of Things, "smart" concepts still demand clarification and original interpretation. For the SynCity summer school 2014, TU Dresden invites up to 20 excellent young researchers, PhD-students and PostDocs from all over the world with an interest in technology development and socio-ecology to explore future trends in urban design.

Within the conception of the SynCity 2014 summer school, the acronym 'Syn' stands for two key concepts:
1) SYNCHRONISATION – the coordinated and harmonized interaction of multiple urban systems which is requisite for a truly smart city; 2) SYNERGY – the creativity and innovation that emerges when smart people from different fields, countries, and cultures meet and exchange ideas.
Participation is limited to 15 international participants. Additionally 5 PhD students from TU Dresden can take part at SynCity. From a practical perspective and through interdisciplinary workshop formats, the summer school SynCity 2014 wants to explore how the technology push of smart technologies can be directed towards more social, human, and urban sustainable development.

Eligibility
In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must be a researcher, who are in an early stage of their academic career, such as PhD students, Post-Docs, and junior faculty, from all over the world.

With the application to the summer school, candidates automatically apply for a refund of up to 90% of the travel expenses. Candidates will be informed about the exact funding with the letter of acceptance. Travels need to be arranged individually and independently by the participants. The summer school organisation committee does not arrange any travels.

Accommodation costs of international participants are covered by TU Dresden (5-/6-bed multi-shared rooms including breakfast) at the Hostel Mezcalero.

Africa Scholarship Program at Alma Graduate University in Bologna

Alma Graduate School, together with the Foundation for World Wide Cooperation, introduces the Africa Scholarship Program for the Academic Year 2014-2015. This Scholarship Program aims to facilitate the participation of 10 young bright talents from Africa, wishing to pursue an MBA and contribute to the social and economic development of their continent.

Candidates need to be citizens of an African Country, hold an undergraduate degree, be proficient in English and have 2 years of professional experience. Beneficiaries will be asked to sign a letter of understanding about the importance of repatriation and contribution to economic and social development of Africa. 

The candidates need to apply for the admission to the 1st level Master Universitario Program in Business Administration. Find more information about the International MBA Program here.

Each of the 10 Scholarships includes:
  • 100% cover of tuition fee (€27,000);
  • grant up to € 10,000 (gross) to cover travel expenses to Italy and living costs in Bologna during the MBA program.

Estonian School of Diplomacy Scholarships

Estonian School of Diplomacy offers limited amount of scholarships to participate in the nine-month training program 'International Relations and European Integration'.

Scholarships for academic year 2014/2015 will be given to following countries (ONLY):  Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgystan, Montenegro, Moldova, Tajikistan, Ukraine.


The scholarship covers the following expenses related to the participation in the training course:
  • tuition fee in full amount
  • costs of visa/residence permit
  • costs of local health insurance
  • costs of accommodation in Tallinn
  • monthly allowance to cover everyday living expenses during the study period
  • NB! Students are expected to bring their own laptop computer for the studies.
Documents needed for application:
  • ESD application form (available HERE)
  • CV in English 
  • Motivation letter (1 page: explaining previous experience, the reasons for applying and how the studies will benefit the student’s future development)
  • copies of university transcript in (unofficial) English translation, i.e. diploma of higher education and academic record
  • copy of (international) passport
  • 1 passport-sized photo (to be added to the application form)
  • academic essay (3-4 pages with references) to be written on one of the topics (indicated inside the respective country`s scholarship offer, see below)

Scholarships of the Government of Slovak Republic

The provision of scholarships of the Government of the Slovak Republic is a long-term component of development assistance by the SR, which is a programme and project activity of the SR Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the framework of the international community. The provision of scholarships of the SR Government in the framework of conditions set out by the OECD for realization of ODA includes also scholarships of the SR Government for Slovak nationals living abroad.

The Slovak Republic Ministry of Education, Science, Research & Sport shall provide a foreigner an SR Government scholarship during the standard length of studies as a student of a public university in the SR as follows:

  1. Language and vocational training – €280 monthly; €0 merit scholarship;
  2. Higher education: first degree - €280 monthly; €50 merit scholarship;
  3. Higher education: second degree - €280 monthly; €50 merit scholarship;
  4. Higher education: third degree - €330 monthly; €170 merit scholarship.
Scholarships are open to applicants from Afghanistan, Kenya, Moldova, Albania, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Ukraine, Mongolia, Palestinian National Authority and Vietnam.

The deadline for the academic year 2014/2015 is 29 May 2014.

Mitrovica Summer University 2014

We are delighted to inform you that this year, for the seventh time, Mitrovica Summer University 2014 (MSU14) will be organized. We are looking for highly motivated students who want to participate in the MSU14 and to make it an unforgettable experience. 
 
Mitrovica Summer University 2014 will take place in Mitrovica between the 11th and 25th of July 2014.
 

Continuing with the original format, the program for MSU14 will bring together local and international professors and students, providing an opportunity to learn and share experiences.
 
During the Mitrovica Summer University 2014, four courses will take place on the following topics:
1. EU integration/ Western Balkan Accession;
2. Economy/Entrepreneurship;
3. Environmental Protection;
4. WEB Design;
 
All courses will be taught by local and international professors and will be in English.
 
Successful participants will gain an official Certificate of the Mitrovica Summer University which includes between 3 to 4 ECTS credits.
 
The two-week courses are organized together with cultural excursions and a recreational program. In addition, public discussions, lectures and other interactive events on prominent issues in society will take place. MSU14 offers a unique opportunity to expand academic knowledge and skills, while enjoying an exciting international atmosphere.

Lectures and classes are tuition free. Participants who study in Mitrovica and students from South East Europe can apply for a scholarship, which covers accommodation and food. In addition, they will receive a one-time stipend covering their travel costs.
