Visegrad Scholarship Program 2017

Visegrad scholarships support Masters and post-Masters (PhD/postdoc) studies/research stays at higher-education institutions in the V4 region, as well as in the Western Balkan and Eastern Partnership countries. 


Eligible applicants (Incoming scheme): Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Russia, Serbia, and Ukraine 

Applicants from these countries can apply for up to 4 semesters (MA level) or 2 semester (PhD/postdoc) at higher-education institutions in V4 countries. 

Eligible applicants (Outgoing/Intra-V4 schemes): Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia 

Applicants from V4 countries can apply for 1 or 2 semesters at higher-education institutions in V4 countries (Intra-Visegrad scheme), and in Western Balkan and Eastern Partnership countries (Outgoing scheme). 

Key details:
- min. study period is 1 semester, max. 2 semesters, or 4 semesters—only within Incoming MA-level scholarships
- having concluded at least 4 university semesters when applying, 6 semesters (equivalent of BA degree program) when starting the scholarship
- spending the entire scholarship period at the host institution
-  program not suitable for joint programs (dou­ble- or multiple-degree) 

Support: €2,300/semester for the scholar + €1,500/semester for the host possibility to apply for a separate travel grant, if residing further than 1,500 km from the host

Gerda Henkel Fellowships 2017/2018

New Europe College, Institute for Advanced Study in the humanities and social sciences in Bucharest, Romania announces a Call for Applications for its newly launched GERDA HENKEL Fellowships. The program targets young researchers / academics working in the fields of humanities (in particular archaeology, art history, historical Islamic studies, history, history of law, history of science, prehistory and early history) from the following countries: Afghanistan, Belarus, China (only Tibet and Xinjiang Autonomous Regions), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

NEC provides an attractive meeting and working place for scholars from all around the world who wish to pursue a meaningful project of their own while also meeting with peers from other disciplines. It supports its fellows by providing excellent conditions for their work and by establishing a strong and productive network among academics and intellectuals in the country and beyond. The institute has acquired a unique position in the region and has established itself as a research center of international reputation.

Fellows are entitled to:
  • A monthly stipend of 750 € (tax free) to cover living expenses related to the stay in Bucharest;
  • Accommodation in Bucharest, comprising living quarters and working space. The Fellows will also have free access to the NEC library and electronic resources/databases;
  • Travel from the home country to Bucharest and back, visa and insurance costs (up to 1000 €);
  • Research field trip abroad during the fellowship period – up to 1,500 € (a one-time allowance);
  • Research expenses (100 € / month).

Candidates are welcome to apply with projects on topics of their choice for:
  • One academic year: October 2017 – July 2018 (10 months);
  • One term: October 2017 – February 2018 / March – July 2018 (5 months).
The selected Fellows are expected to take part in the weekly seminars at the institute together with all the other Romanian and international scholars present at NEC, and in other scientific events organized by the institute. Fellows have the opportunity to benefit from NEC’s widespread international research network and its high-quality guest lecturers program. The institute’s working languages are English, French, and German; a good command of English is required. Fellows are assisted in all practical matters concerning travel, residence, and research in Bucharest. Toward the end of their stay, they are required to document the outcomes of their work in a scholarly paper (in English, French, or German).


Eligibility:

Candidates must
  • Hold a Ph.D. title in the fields of the historical humanities mentioned above;
  • Be citizen of one of the above mentioned countries.
International research experience (participation in projects and refereed conferences) and publications in peer-reviewed academic editions are strong advantages.
Preference will be given to candidates below the age of 45, and to those who have not yet benefited from a Fellowship at NEC.

Riau International Youth Summit 2016

Youth, as active agents of future growth, have a great responsibility in ensuring that our nation live in a world that is better than today. Youth have to able to hold answer keys to the question ‘what is the role of young people in driving change?’ since our responses to this will affect on us and our world. The rise of youth forums and youth movements should, therefore, be supported in order to facilitate and provide space for young people determine their role and keys in shaping our better future.

Regarding this point, Youth and Sports Department of Riau Province is delighted to hold Riau International Youth Summit 2016 which is designed for young people from over the world to foster mutual understanding through dialogue and to deliberate development issues in our and their own country.
The summit engages selected youth into discussion and evidence sharing of youth work in their homeland. Moreover, the summit encourages the participants to work on issues from topics available, namely Education and Youth Entrepreneurship. The output from the summit will be developed to be appropriate strategies to address issues of abovementioned subjects to local government or to be continuously executed individually or together by the summit participants.

Riau International Youth Summit 2016 is expected to welcome 150 participants comprised of 100 national participants and 50 international participants. 

Eligibility
  • Public participants, youth aged 20-30 years old from across the world. Indonesian citizens proved with valid KTP and foreigners proved with valid ID Card or passport;
  • Must has min. graduated from Senior High School or equal institution;
  • Must be mentally and physically fine and fit to follow the program; 
  • Must possess clean criminal record;
  • Must be able to communicate actively in English. The language used during the summit is English; 
  • Must willing to be an active and positive participant to involve in discussions; 
  • Must commit to follow local arranged rules to ensure the program run well; 
  • Actively involved in an organisation, a local or social project would be also considered. 


  • Selection Process
  • The applicant must fill out the RIYS 2016 form available at the official site of PCMI Riau ( www.pcmiriau.or.id).
  • The applicant must submit a max. 500 word essay in English related to the one of RIYS 2016 sub-themes. The best essay will be granted for a prize and the chosen sub-theme must be clearly stated; 
  • The essay must be original, must contain self-opinion and ideas and has never been published. Submitted essay will be privilege for the RIYS 2016 organiser; 
  • Absolute essay judgment will be done professionally and it can’t be disobeyed.

    Gates Cambridge Scholarship 2017

    Each year, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funds Gates Cambridge Scholarship to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge. Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge. It also provides additional, discretionary funding.

    The aim of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme is to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others.

    The Gates Cambridge Scholarship programme was established in October 2000 by a donation of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge; this is the largest ever single donation to a UK university.


    At Cambridge, Scholars pursue the full range of subjects available at the University and are spread through its departments and Colleges.

    Course Level: Gates Cambridge Scholarship is available to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree (PhD, MSc or MLitt or one-year postgraduate course) in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

    Study Subject (s): Gates Cambridge Scholarship is awarded to study any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

    Scholarship Award: A Gates Cambridge Scholarship covers the full cost of studying at Cambridge. It also provides additional, discretionary funding. The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is one of the most generous international scholarships available. It covers the following costs:

    Core components
    • the University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate*
    • a maintenance allowance for a single student (£14,600 for 12 months at the 2016-17 rate; pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months)
    • one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course
    • inbound visa costs & associated NHS surcharge costs
    Discretionary components
    The Trust also considers applications for several types of additional funding on a discretionary basis:
    • Academic development funding – from £500 to £1,500, dependent on the length of your course, to attend conferences and courses.
    • Family allowance – up to £10,120 for a first child and up to £4,320 for a second child (2016-17 rate). No funding is provided for a partner.
    • Fieldwork – you may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD.
    • Hardship funding – for unforeseen difficulties
    • Maternity/Paternity funding – should you require it, you may apply to intermit your studies for up to 6 months and continue to receive your maintenance allowance during this time
    • Some fourth year funding for PhD Scholars may be provided**
    *The University Composition Fee varies for different types of students; applicants should see the Graduate Studies prospectus for full details about precise amounts. Where a student from the European Union has been successful in gaining a fees award from public authorities they must accept this and the Trust will not pay these fees.
    ** The PhD at Cambridge is a three-year degree and Gates Cambridge Scholars should take on a research project that they and their Supervisor think can be completed within three years. However, if there are unforeseen circumstances which mean you need further funding during all or part of your fourth year, the Trust will consider an application on a discretionary basis. But you should not rely on receiving any fourth year funding when you start your PhD.

    Receiving a salary or substantial other scholarship?
    If you are receiving a salary from an employer or have another substantial scholarship, the Trust reserves the right to reduce or not pay the standard maintenance allowance. You should let the Trust know ASAP if you are awarded any funding towards your degree at Cambridge.

    What is not covered
    Most costs are covered by the Scholarship but Gates Cambridge does not cover bench fees or the costs of scientific equipment or similar academic resources. The Trust expects such core course costs to be covered by the academic department at Cambridge.

    Scholarship can be taken in the UK

    Eligibility: Scholarships are available for a postgraduate degree in any subject at Cambridge for applicants who are ordinarily resident outside the United Kingdom, Applicants can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if they are:

    • a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom
    • applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge:
      • PhD (three-year research-only degree)
      • MSc or MLitt (two-year research-only degree)
      • One year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.)
    • Applicants can use the form below to quickly check if they are eligible to apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and, if so, in which of the two application rounds you must apply. Applicants will find full details about our eligibility criteria further down the page.
    Current student at Cambridge?
    • If they are currently studying at Cambridge and wish to apply for a new postgraduate course they can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. For example, if they are currently studying for an MPhil they can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to pursue a PhD. The application round they must apply in will be determined by their country of ordinary residence – please use the eligibility checker above. Please also note that if you currently studying at Cambridge but are normally resident in the USA they will now need to apply in the earlier US round.
    • If they have already started a course you cannot apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to fund the remainder of it.
    • Current Gates Cambridge Scholars may also apply for a second scholarship if they are applying for a new degree.
    Nationality: Citizens of any country outside the United Kingdom can apply for these bill gates scholarships.
    College Admission Requirement
    Entrance Requirement: Applicants must have their previous degree.
    Test Requirement: No

    English Language Requirements: Graduate Admissions Office or academic department may require some applicants to submit the following for admission to the University:
    • English language test scores (if English is not your first language)
    • A research proposal, an example of your written work, a GRE/GMAT score, etc. Not all applicants will be required to submit such documents
    How to Apply: Applicants apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and admission to their chosen postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge and a Cambridge College via the Graduate Admissions Office, using the Graduate Application Form and supporting documents. It is not possible to apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship without applying to the University of Cambridge. You must apply for admission as a postgraduate student at the University of Cambridge and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship at the same time, using the one application pack. To be considered for postgraduate admission and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship all applicants must submit the following documents to the Graduate Admissions Office by the relevant deadline:-
    • Graduate Application Form (which includes a Gates Cambridge section)

    • 2 academic references
    • 1 personal reference (for the Gates Cambridge Scholarship)

    International Winter School for Educators

    The winter school will provide a forum for 15 junior educators from European countries who want to exchange ideas on methods and teaching practices on the topic of Nazi forced labour and its memory in post-war Europe from a transnational perspective. The focus will be on civilian forced labour in Nazi Germany. The winter school will also focus on how educators can use documents archived in the ITS Digital Archive, which include among others multi-million page collections of records on forced labour, post-war DPs and resettlement.

    The winter school will be convened on 19 – 25 February 2017 in Berlin.


    The key aspects of this winter school are:
    • to discuss contemporary challenges facing history educators in Europe, with particular emphasis on teaching the history and the aftermath of forced labour during WWII, including repatriation and emigration of former forced labourers.
    • to explore the documentation of the International Tracing Service and to identify the material that offers particularly rich opportunities for new educational projects
    • to encourage the exchange of ideas for partnered projects between the winter school participants.

    Eligibility
    • 15 junior educators from European countries (teachers, museum workers, advanced students in Public History and other relevant disciplines). The participants will be asked to actively participate in the discussions and share their experiences related to the seminar theme.
    • The language of the winter school is English.
    Costs
    The organizers will attempt to cover the costs of travel, accommodation and meals for the selected participants.

    African Humanities Program

    The African Humanities Program (AHP) seeks to reinvigorate the humanities in Africa through fellowship competitions and related activities in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. In partnership with the Carnegie Corporation of New York, which has generously provided funding, AHP offers African scholars an integrated set of opportunities to develop individual capacities and to promote formation of scholarly networks. The African Humanities Program supports the Carnegie Corporation’s efforts to develop and retain African academics at universities in Africa.


    Goals of the African Humanities Program
    • to encourage and enable the production of new knowledge and new directions for research
    • to strengthen the capacity of early career researchers and faculty at African universities
    • to build the field of humanities by establishing networks for scholarly communication across Africa and with Africanists worldwide.
    Fellowship stipends allow recipients an academic year free from teaching and other duties for completion of the PhD dissertation, for revising the dissertation for publication, or for the first major research project after the PhD. Fellows are also eligible for additional benefits such as residential stays for writing, manuscript development workshops, and publication support.

    Each Fellow may request a residential stay at an African institute for advanced study. Residencies have proved to be extremely popular and productive, granting Fellows time and space to concentrate on writing. Because residencies must be taken at an institute outside the home country, they foster international communication. Currently AHP Fellows may take residencies at six institutes from South Africa to Senegal, Ghana to Tanzania.

    Fellows are invited to submit their manuscripts to the AHP Publications series, a collaboration with UNISA Press in Pretoria, South Africa. The rigorous development and peer-review process of AHP Publications is overseen by series co-editors, Kwesi Yankah, Central University College, Ghana, and Frederick Hendricks, Rhodes University, South Africa.

    Fellows may apply to attend a Manuscript-Development Workshop to discuss their manuscripts with AHP mentors and other Fellows in a weeklong, intensive retreat. Many authors use these discussions to guide their final revisions before submitting manuscripts for publication.

    Fellowship Details
    • Applicants must be nationals and residents of a country in sub-Saharan Africa, with a current affiliation at an institution in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.
    • Funding is available for dissertation completion and for postdoctoral research and writing.
    • Applicants for Dissertation-Completion Fellowships should be in the final year of writing the dissertation at a university in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, or Uganda.
    • Dissertation-Completion Fellowships are not available in South Africa.
    • Applicants for Early Career Postdoctoral Fellowships must be working in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda and must have completed the PhD no more than eight years ago.
    • Projects must be in the humanities and must be carried out in sub-Saharan Africa. AHP fellowships may not be used for travel outside the continent.

    Visby Programme Scholarships 2017/2018

    The scholarship application call for the academic year 2017/2018 is open from 1 November 2016 to 10 January 2017. About 40 scholarships will be offered.

    The aim of the Visby Programme is to support individual mobility, thereby contributing to increased contacts and collaborations between actors in Sweden and countries in the EU Eastern Partnership and Russia. The goal is to build an integrated, knowledge-based and research-intense region, centred on the Baltic Sea while also including EU Eastern Partnership countries and Russia.


    Countries
    The Visby Programme is open to citizens of the following countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine. The objective is to strengthen co-operation and network-building between those countries and Sweden in fields such as higher education and research.

    Who is eligible?
    The programme provides PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with an opportunity to conduct research at Swedish universities within all fields of study. Candidates belonging to any of the following categories may apply:
    • PhD student, applying for a part of his/her ongoing PhD studies to be carried out in Sweden (12 months maximum).
    • Postdoctoral researcher, with priority given to holders of a PhD degree from 2012 or later (12 months maximum).
    • Senior scientist – holders of a PhD degree obtained before 2012 (6 months maximum).
    A scholarship cannot be granted for an applicant who:
    • has already lived in Sweden for two or more years when the scholarship period is due to begin
    • already has a Swedish permanent residence permit
    • has a Swedish work permit and is not an EU citizen
    • is applying for a scholarship at PhD level but is not enrolled in ongoing PhD studies outside of Sweden
    • is applying for a scholarship at postdoctoral level, but does not hold a PhD degree
    • has already been awarded three or more scholarships/grants from SI.
    Selection criteria and areas of priority
    Applications are evaluated by the Swedish Institute (SI) and an academic board. The primary evaluation of the application takes into account the applicant’s academic background, personal motivation and expertise in the project field of the host department. Also evaluated is the strength of the research proposal with regards to its scientific quality, originality, methodological approach, and relevance. In the final selection of candidates SI will consider the distribution of scholarships with regards to academic fields, universities, purpose of study, nationality and gender.
    Research fields within all academic disciplines are eligible.

    Scholarship benefits
    The scholarship is free of tax and amounts to SEK 15,000 per month for PhD students and SEK 18,000 per month for postdoctoral researchers and senior scientists. The scholarship cannot be prolonged or extended.

    Scholarship limitations
    • the scholarship is designed to cover living costs for the scholarship holder. There are no grants for family members. No funding for bench fees is provided.
    • the granted scholarship period cannot be altered or extended; however, it is possible to apply for subsequent funding through a new call for applications.
    • PhD students on a sandwich setup are allowed up to two visits per scholarship year.
    • in case of a postponed arrival date, the scholarship period can be decreased accordingly.
    • there is no travel grant included in the scholarship offer.

    Facebook Fellowship Program

    The Facebook Fellowship Program is designed to encourage and support promising doctoral students who are engaged in innovative and relevant research in areas related to computer science and engineering. Winners of the fellowship are entitled to receive two years of tuition and fees paid, a stipend of $37,000 each year, and up to $5,000 in conference travel support. Applications will be evaluated based on the strength of the student's research statement, publication record, and recommendation letters. While open to students in any year of PhD study, heavy emphasis on research and publication record favors students who are further along in their course of study.

    Eastern European Academy for Social Democracy 2016

    The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung invites progressive young leaders between 25 and 35 years to apply for the first edition of the Eastern European Academy for Social Democracy, which will take place from 20th till 27th of November 2016 in Germany (Berlin, Schwerin). 

      Goals of the programme:
    • The Academy is primarily aimed at around 25 candidates who are committed to social democratic values, and who are interested in strengthening the political dialogue between their nations and the bilateral relations of their home countries with Germany and the European Union.
    • Besides promoting peaceful dialogue, mutual understanding and the exchange of social democratic policies the academy offers participatory workshops on practical key competences and soft skills.
    • Furthermore, the programme will provide a deep insight into the political situation of the respective host country and high level discussions with politicians and civil society experts.
    • As an expected outcome the Academy wants to create a growing, sustainable network of Eastern European future leaders who are willing to facilitate dialogue orientated processes in connecting young, committed, and progressive people who are open to find new ideas on how to cooperate within Europe.
    Programme overview:
    • In future, the academy will take place four times per year in different countries of the region with changing topics and workshops. In the first meeting in Germany in November this year the programme will contain planning know-how in the skills part and principles of a social and democratic foreign policy on the knowledge part. Furthermore, participants can expect meetings with politicians, journalists that are specialized on Eastern Europe and other political actors on both the national and the regional layer in Germany.
    • Most probably in 2017 the programme will take place in Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia. Intended topics are: socio-economic principles, energy and sustainability, and social justice (knowledge); conflict resolution and negotiations, media training, and convincing with arguments (skills).
    • Participants of the first edition are welcome to apply for future editions as well. The sustainable work with alumni as well as the creation of a strong progressive network within the project region will play a significant role and require a long-term commitment by the participants. That includes willingness and competence in organizing political contact programmes in your country on the national and regional layer – together with the organizers of the programme.
    • The overall working language is English. All costs related to the programme will be covered by the organizers.
    Candidates’ requirements for participation:
    • Citizenship of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Germany, Moldova, the Russian Federation, or Ukraine.
    • Between 25 and 35 years of age
    • Command of English language
    • Young leader in a progressive political party or a social democratic youth organization; young member of Parliament, junior government official or activist in civil society.
    • Willingness to support organizing an interesting and target orientated programme in the candidate’s own country for the other participants of the programme when the academy will take place there.
    • Willingness to actively take part in alumni activities in order to help to create a growing, sustainable network of alumni.

The letter should include not only your personal motivation but also 2-3 ideas why the creation of a network like this is meaningful for future cooperation in Europe.     2016 Human Science Summer School in Fukuoka

    The Human Science International Course in the Graduate School of Design, Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan, invites Graduate School students studying outside of Japan to the 2016 Human Science Summer School. Those of you eligible and interested in the education of our International Course are encouraged to apply. We offer financial support and course credits, as well as course education and laboratory experience.

    The Human Science Summer School provides a program consisting of 15 lectures of 90 min in combination with research experience at a laboratory of a faculty member of your choosing (afternoons). The lecture course, Advanced Design and Technologies for Human Science, is designed as an overview of the whole curriculum of the Human Science International Course.


    Eligibility

    In order to be considered eligible to apply, you must fulfill all of the following criteria:
    • Graduate School students of universities/institutes outside Japan;
    • Those who are interested in education and research of our Human Science International Course;
    • Those with sufficient English capability to follow 15 lectures and do laboratory work;
    • Those who can get a recommendation from their current supervisor.
    Scholarships
    • Full or partial support is provided for an economy-class air ticket to and from Japan, accommodation, and meals. The total amount may vary among participants, taking account of the participants’ total amount of air fares,the available budget, and whether you have support from your university or not;
    • You will stay at a dormitory room with a kitchenette and free LAN.

    World Forum for Democracy 2016

    Education and democracy: how to bridge the social divides? Strasbourg, 7-9 November 2016.

    Education is central to democratic societies. Schools, universities, civil society organisations and other learning institutions should encourage the acquisition and practice of values and skills which are essential for democracy.

    However, the economic crisis and unemployment have lead many countries to focus education mostly on preparing learners for the labour market. Education is instrumental for community-building, social cohesion and a sense of belonging to society. In today’s increasingly diverse, interdependent societies, the capacity to engage across cultural and other differences and transcend a narrow understanding of a national interest in order to address the common challenges for humanity, is becoming crucial. Is it possible to build upon successful innovative initiatives from across the world to strengthen the democratic mission of education?

    The World Forum for Democracy 2016 will focus on how education can help bridge the social divide and become a real asset for our diverse democracies. The Forum will analyse the impact of education systems on democracy and identify innovative initiatives and practices which can make education (both formal and non-formal) more democracy-centred, and critically assess their potential to trigger systemic change. It will focus on the issue of how education can become better at nurturing citizens as active members of society who engage in public space – and how grassroots innovation can be enhanced to promote change in education practice on a greater scale. The Forum will discuss not only what Education can do for Democracy but also what Democracy can do for Education.

    The World Forum for Democracy is a platform for dialogue and innovation dedicated to democracy which promotes the Council of Europe principles across the world. A unique event of its kind, it deals with challenges facing democracy taking as a starting point innovative initiatives and practice, and fostering debate between different actors in order to find SOLUTIONS. The Forum highlights and encourages democratic innovation to strengthen the foundations of democratic societies. A democratic exercise in itself, the Forum aims at giving the people – demos – their rightful place in political decision-making. It thus contributes to the evolution of democracy towards more participatory and inclusive structures and institutions.

    The labs are the heart of the World Forum for Democracy. Their idea is to address specific issues through the critical analysis of tested initiatives. The initiatives will be presented in short speeches of ten minutes and critically assessed by multidisciplinary panels and participants in the labs. Cartoonists will illustrate the sessions live. The key conclusions and lessons learnt from the labs will be discussed in a summing up session in order to prepare the overall conclusions for the Forum.

    Interested organisations/institutions worldwide are invited to express their interest in presenting an example/initiative to make education more democracy-centred or to revitalise democracy through education, by answering the questionnaire in the appendix and sending it to forum_democracy@coe.intby 15 May 2016. The World Forum Task Force will select the most interesting and relevant proposals in June 2016.

    One presenter for the selected initiatives will be invited to Strasbourg to take part in the World Forum. Funded places are available. Any public or private organisation is eligible to apply.

    Training Program in International Relations and European Integration

    In the academic year 2016/2017 Estonian School of Diplomacy (ESD), in co-operation with the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, offers scholarships for young diplomats and civil servants to participate in the training program International Relations and European Integration taking place at the Estonian School of Diplomacy in Tallinn, from September 12, 2016 until May 31, 2017.

    ELIGIBLE COUNTRIES: 
    Armenia, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Egypt, Georgia, India, Iran; Nepal, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Morocco, Ukraine, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Tunisia.

    STUDY PROCESS: 
    - Training course International Relations and European Integration with the value of 60 ECTS Credit Points starts on 12 September 2016 and ends on 31 May 2017;
    - Successful students will receive the ESD Diploma and Academic Record;
    - Students from Estonia and from other countries study together. Language of instruction is English;
    - Lecturers come from Estonia, other EU Member States, Norway, Sweden, and Finland;
    - Detailed curriculum for 2016/2017 will be made available at ESD website from 1 April 2016;
    - The training course includes three thematic modules:
             International Relations;
             European Studies;
             Diplomatic Studies.

    SCHOLARSHIP COVERS: 
    - tuition fee;
    - monthly allowance (450 EUR);
    - accommodation in Tallinn (incl. utilities and internet connection);
    - health insurance in Estonia during the studies;
    - cost of Schengen visa and Estonian residence permit;
    - scholarship does NOT cover the costs of travel to and from Tallinn.

    - is highly motivated to learn about international relations and related disciplines. Priority will be given for the candidates strongly motivated to continue their professional careers within the service of their respective country/territory;
    - is hard working, co-operative and ready for cross-cultural study environment.

    Scottish Universities’ International Summer School

    The Scottish Universities’ International Summer School (SUISS) was founded as a non-profit organisation by Professor David Daiches in 1947. In the spirit of the Edinburgh International Festival, SUISS brings together students and academics who, irrespective of their national, religious, or cultural difference, share a love of literature.

    SUISS is affiliated with seven prestigious Scottish universities: The University of Aberdeen, The University of Dundee, The University of Edinburgh, The University of Glasgow, The Open University in Scotland, The University of St Andrews and The University of Strathclyde.

    Throughout its 66 years, SUISS has achieved a high academic standing and has welcomed many distinguished literary scholars, critics and writers. Lecturers on the Text & Context course have included Robert Crawford, Randall Stevenson and Patricia Waugh to name a few. We have also welcomed many writers to contribute to our Creative Writing course, names such as Neil Gaiman, AL Kennedy and Ian Rankin.

    Each summer, SUISS offers an intense, challenging and diverse programme of study that takes place in July and August in Edinburgh, the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. We offer three courses in Text and Context: British and Irish Literature from 1900 to the Present, one course in Creative Writing, and one course in Contemporary British and Irish Theatre and Performance. Our literature courses offer extensive examination of Modernism, Scottish Literature and Contemporary Literature, while our Creative Writing course allows students to develop their personal writing portfolios. Our Theatre and Performance course, which explores both theoretical and performative approaches to drama, coincides with the Edinburgh Festivals and is delivered in partnership with the Scottish Playwrights’ Studio.

    ECB Traineeships in English Translation and Editing

    The European Central Bank (ECB) is seeking applications from recent graduates or students who are close to completing their master’s studies for a traineeship in the English Translation and Editing Section (ETE) within Directorate General Communications (DG/C). ETE is responsible for providing translation, editing, proof-reading and terminology services for the ECB to support the ECB’s reporting obligations and its external communication activities in English. ETE also advises the staff and the decision-making bodies of the ECB on linguistic matters.

    The aim of the traineeships is to provide talented candidates with an opportunity to gain professional experience in translating into English from other official European Union (EU) languages and in editing/proof-reading of documents in English.

    The trainees will be expected to participate actively in the work of ETE. Successful applicants will be entrusted with the following main tasks:

    • translating into English from other official EU languages a broad range of materials in the fields of monetary policy and banking supervision;
    • editing and proof-reading of documents drafted in English;
    • providing linguistic and drafting advice in English in support of the ECB’s communication policy.
    Qualifications and Experience

    Applicants must have the following knowledge and competencies:
    • a master’s degree (or equivalent qualification) in translation or modern languages, or be a student currently embarking upon his/her final year of master’s degree on such a course;
    • a perfect command of English together with proven drafting ability in English;
    • ability to translate from at least one EU official language into English;
    • experience of editing and/or proof-reading English texts, either as part of a degree course or in a professional context, would be an advantage;
    • ideally, experience of translating using computer-assisted translation tools such as Studio;
    • a basic knowledge of economics, central banking issues and/or banking supervision would be an asset;
    • a working knowledge of MS Office, such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
    Competencies 
     
    The successful candidates will have the following behavioural competencies:
    • generate agreed results within tight time frames, prioritising tasks and paying attention to detail, and are able to manage multiple assignments and track progress on numerous processes simultaneously;

    Remuneration
     
    The trainee grant is the exact amount of EUR 1,050 per month. The trainee grant is increased to EUR 1,900 per month for trainees who have completed at least two years of PhD study and who apply for a traineeship vacancy that requires such a level of qualification.

    Further Information

    Traineeship for a period of six months, with the possibility of a six-month extension in the same business area.
    The selection committee may place suitable candidates on a reserve list, from which candidates may be appointed to similar positions in the same or another business area. It may also be decided to fill the position(s) advertised in this vacancy notice with a suitable candidate or candidates from the reserve list resulting from a recruitment procedure for a similar position.
