Youth Encountering Environmental Human Rights

We invite you to apply for the study session “Youth Encountering Environmental Human Rights” (24.02.-02.03.2013) that will take place at the European Youth Centre in Budapest.

This study session aims to promote active youth participation in environmental human rights education and peaceful activism. We have prepared this activity for youth workers, educators, activists- anyone interested to explore the topic of environmental human rights, willing to share their histories of participation and learn new ways of engaging in local and global environmental matters.

“All over the world, people are experiencing the effects of ecosystem decline, from water shortages to fish kills and landslides on deforested slopes. The victims of environmental degradation tend to belong to more vulnerable sectors of the society —racial and ethnic minorities and the poor—who regularly carry a disproportionate burden of such abuse. Increasingly, many basic human rights are being placed at risk, as the right to health is affected by the contamination of resources, or the right to property and culture compromised by commercial intrusion into indigenous lands. Human rights activism presents a significant opportunity to address the human consequences of environmental degradation and can serve as a catalyst for inspiring ideas and action in the real world ”

IYNF finds it essential to empower young people to defend their rights and the rights of the communities that are affected by abuse of local ecosystems and climate change. We believe that human rights education plays an important role in exploring the interdependencies of rights and links between environmental degradation and human rights. Thus this course!

During this study session we also want to build a network of young people willing to multiply their knowledge and create follow-up initiatives and projects in the field of human rights education, environmental education, education for sustainable development and youth participation internationally and in their local communities.

5th CEE Forum 2013 in Greifswald

The 5th CEE Forum for Young Legal, Political and Social Theorists will be held from Friday, 3 May to Saturday, 4 May 2013 in Greifswald at the Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg in cooperation with the University of Greifswald.

The CEE Forum is a platform for young legal, political and social theorists who come from, currently study or work in Central and Eastern Europe or have a research interest in the region. The regional boundaries are understood widely. The target audiences of the conference are young researchers, espe-cially doctoral students and post-docs, without a specific age limit. As in the previous Forums, the conference will be organised in three concurrent panels and will put its special emphasis on two major general topics.

(1) Separation of Powers & Constitutional Review
In the first panel we are going to discuss two core elements of modern constitutional democracies: separation of powers and constitutional review. These ideas are of enduring timeliness in legal and political theory. We especially welcome submissions to answer the following questions: Is the separation of powers still applicable to the complexity of modern polities or is it of mere historical importance? How is this principle realised in the governmental system of the European Union? What is the exact meaning of the term separation and its manifold synonyms and alternatives? What is the “nature” of constitutional review: Is it jurisdiction, politics in the cloak of the law, something in between or even something totally different? What are the borders of constitutional review? How does the relationship between separation of powers and constitutional review look like: What is (or should be) the place of constitutional review in a power-separating order? Is it a part or the top of the judiciary or an own branch?

(2) Constitutional Rights & Obligations
The second panel is dedicated to constitutional rights and obligations. Most modern constitutions provide basic rights and freedoms for individuals and/or groups in order to protect them against encroachments by the state. Additionally, there is some general consent in constitutional theory, which fundamental rights a constitution should at least guarantee. In contrast, obligations are much rarer in the constitutional landscape. Even basic necessities like tax paying are often not elevated to constitutional status. Analogously, it is controversially debated in legal and political theory whether constitutions should impose certain obligations on its citizens at all. Against this background, we are expecting contributions to discuss the following questions: Should constitutions incorporate obligations or do obligations systematically violate the basic principles of liberal and democratic polities? How are constitutional obligations related to constitutional rights – both normatively and empirically? In particular, how do obligations influence liberty rights? Finally, which perspective do concurrent theories of democracy take on constitutional obligations, for instance on the idea of compulsory voting?

(3) Open Panel
In order to meet the diverse interests of the Forum’s participants from different disciplines, the third panel will be open to all interesting topics from the vast area of legal, political and social theory.

The conference language is English. An up to 500 words abstract, indicating the preferable panel, should be submitted in the available application form by 31 December 2012 to cee-forum2013@uni-greifswald.de. Acceptance of the papers will be communicated by 31 January 2013. Participation without presentation is possible as well. In that case the deadline is 20 April 2013; please use the application form, too.

The conference fee for all participants is 50,- €. All participants will obtain conference material, drinks and snacks during the breaks, and altogether three meals. Participants shall make arrangements and pay for their accommodation individually. Please note the information on lodging options and directions.

DAAD Master and PhD Scholarships 2013

Study scholarships are awarded to provide foreign graduates of all disciplines with opportunities to complete a postgraduate or Master’s degree course at a state (public) or state-recognized German higher education institution and to gain a degree in Germany (Master’s/Diplom).

Depending on the length of the chosen degree course or study project, the study scholarship will be awarded for between 10 and 24 months. Initially, scholarships are awarded for one academic year and can be extended for students with good study achievements to cover the full length of the chosen degree course.

Eligibility
  • Applications for DAAD study scholarships are open to excellently-qualified graduates who, at the latest when they commence their scholarship-supported studies, hold a first degree (Bachelor’s, Diplom or comparable academic degree). No more than six years should generally have passed between the time when they gained their degree and the time of this application.
  • Besides previous academic achievements, the most important selection criterion is a convincing presentation of the applicant’s academic and personal reasons for the planned study project in Germany. Applications must either include the notification of admission issued by the German host institution for the desired degree course, or, if this is not the case, then the notification of admission must be presented to the DAAD before the scholarship-supported studies begin. The scholarship award letter from the DAAD only becomes effective once the holder has been admitted to studies. If the degree programme includes a several month long stay abroad, funding for this stay abroad will generally only be considered if it takes place in an EU Country (not in the home country) and lasts a maximum of 6 months and covers a maximum of 25% of the scholarship term.
  • Applicants, who have been resident in Germany for longer than one year at the time of application, cannot be considered.
Scholarships

The DAAD will pay a monthly award of 750 euros. As a rule, the scholarship additionally includes certain payments towards health insurance cover in Germany. In addition, the DAAD generally will pay an appropriate flat-rate travel allowance, unless these costs are covered by the home country or by another funding source. Furthermore, the DAAD will pay a study and research allowance and, where appropriate, a rent subsidy and family allowance.
Application procedure
  • Detailed information on what application papers need to be submitted can be found in the Application Form for “Research Grants and Study Scholarships.”
  • Besides presenting the academic and personal reasons for the planned study project in Germany, the application must be accompanied by an extract from the host university’s website with concrete details (title of the degree programme, study plan and the expected length of studies, language of instruction, admissions requirements plus information on any tuition fees) for the chosen degree programme.
  • The DAAD will not consider incomplete applications. Country-specific information, dates and deadlines, application address and advice
Application deadline

Please note that the scholarships awarded to foreign students differ for each country, meaning that each country has its own deadline for collecting the applications. Country-specific Information on the DAAD Scholarship Programmes 2013/2014 can be found here. This information includes the language skills which applicants from your country of origin must meet, any special age-limit regulations which may apply, as well as information on the exact deadlines for the submission of the application papers and on where applications should be sent.

Written applications will be collected  by the local DAAD-IC office representatives or the German Embassy directly.
In January or February of the following year, selection committees and interviews will commence for all applicants.

Selection criteria
  1. Selection will be based on academic merit, knowledge of the language required, extracurricular activities, and leadership potential, and will follow a multi-tiered and transparent process. All completed applications will be reviewed and valuated by selection teams representing the universities, DAAD and OSF. Semi-finalists will be invited for an in-country interview between January and February. The interview will be carried out either in German or in English based on selected course of studies.
  2. All applicants must be aware that after a 2-4 month language course, an adequate level of German must be demonstrated in order to fulfil all necessary academic requirements.
  3. Applicants must present the TOEFL and where needed the GRE test results or proof of registration at the time of an interview.
For more information please refer to the local DAAD Office contact in the first instance, or the official website.
