5 Things Not to Do When Applying to College

College is a gateway to many opportunities. During these formative years, foundations are laid and bridges are built to future successes.

A variety of college and university options exist, but choosing the right institution will ensure that you have access to the right resources, programs, and faculty that meet your needs. However, don’t forget that colleges are selecting you too. They are looking for prospective students who will contribute to their campus community and who have a well-rounded academic and extracurricular track record.

For this reason, it is important to avoid these five common mistakes when applying to college:

1. Don’t Procrastinate
The first mistake you don’t want to make when applying to college is to wait until the last minute to apply. The application process can be lengthy, and it’s important to have plenty of time to complete all the paperwork and take the required tests. Many high school students are advised to begin planning as early as their sophomore year. Start looking at schools you are interested in and find out which tests and scores they require. Many schools require the SAT and/or the ACT. It is a good idea to take these tests your sophomore and junior year for practice, so you are prepared when senior year arrives. Start early so that you have plenty of time to complete the application process and submit your highest possible scores.

2. Don’t Put Off Visiting
A big mistake applicants make is to not visit the college they are planning to attend. Academics are not the only aspect to consider when applying to a school; finding success in college can also largely depend on the campus atmosphere and whether or not it is a place where you feel you can thrive. Make a list of attributes that you are looking for in a school campus, and take a visit to the schools on the top of your list. Plan ahead and meet with teachers and advisors to help you get a feel for the faculty. Many schools can also arrange time for you to meet with current students, so it’s wise to have a few questions ready to ask them as well.

3. Don’t Ignore Social Media
Whatever you do, don’t forget about your social media platforms. These platforms include Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and any other publicly accessible networks where you have published personal information. As the influence of social media increases, it is becoming more common for schools to carefully look over your online presence. Make sure to take down any potentially incriminating photographs and posts. Better yet: Make filtering your online presence a habit as it will be a skill you will need beyond college. Always think before you post something online, and ask yourself what potential schools or employers would think if they saw it — because they might!

4. Don’t Lie
Over all else, you don’t want to make the mistake of falsifying information on your application. For some students, it can be tempting to elevate applications with extracurricular activities or awards that are not completely accurate. It is far better to be honest, even if you think your resume isn’t as diverse as others, than include misinformation. Colleges are not only able to usually pick up on these discrepancies, but often times if they suspect something is incorrect, they will seek to verify the information. In the end, believe in yourself enough to present the truth, and you will be laying a foundation that will prepare you even further success during your college years.

5. Don’t Slack
Finally, though the dreaded senioritis may set in once you are accepted into college, do not slack off your last semester before graduation. Many high school students are under the false assumption that it is only the first half of their high school senior year that colleges are concerned with. But according to an article in the New York Times, colleges often require midterm and final grades to be sent to admissions offices. Furthermore, make sure you don’t become distracted by first-year excitement once college actually begins, because many scholarships and internships are highly dependent on student achievement throughout the year, and you don’t want to get off on the wrong foot.

Youth and Conflict - Conflict Resolution Education in Central Asia

The Center for Conflict Studies (CCS) at the University of Marburg is delighted to announce the call for applications for the international summer school “Youth and Conict - Conict Resolution Education in Central Asia”. The CCS has been awarded a grant by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) to organize the summer school in collaboration with the Kyrgyz Russian Slavonic University (KRSU) and the DAAD in Bishkek. The summer school will take place at KRSU on August 25 - 31, 2013.

The summer school deals with the role of the youth in Central Asia with a special focus on conflicts and conflict resolution approaches. The role of youth with regard to conflicts is ambiguous. Youth may play a central role as a high-risk group for conflict escalation as well as be „agents of change“ who can stimulate a peaceful development and social consensus within conflict societies. On average, Central Asian societies are rather young with a high percentage of young people who have great impact on the societal development. Central Asia has been in transition since the end of the Cold War and has had to deal with violent conflict where „youth bulges“ at times played an important role for the conflict process. An in-depth analysis of the role of youth in connection with conflict in Central Asia therefore lies at hand.

The objectives of the summer school are threefold:
  • First, students will receive training in approaches to conflict resolution and mediation.
  • Second, students will be introduced to conflict resolution education and the role of marginalized youth in conflict transformation.
  • Finally, students will apply the acquired skills in practice through the analysis of specific conflicts in Central Asia.
FINANCIAL CONDITIONS: Thanks to the financial support by the DAAD we can offer full funding for travel and board for all accepted applicants. Accepted applicants are asked to book tickets to Bishkek early in advance.

ELIGIBILITY: Students must hold a BA degree and have Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Turkmen or Uzbek citizenship. Applications from nationals of other countries will not be accepted. In addition, a small number of Master or doctoral students from Germany can also be funded.

APPLICATION: All applicants are asked to submit a CV of no more than two pages and a letter of motivation. The letter of motivation must not exceed 700 words. The letter of motivation should outline the reasons for applying and the intended benefits you expect for your further studies at university, research or professional career.

Please send your application to summpacs@staff.uni-marburg.de. DEADLINE: April 15, 2013. Applicants who are selected will take part in an essay competition (deadline: August 1, 2013).

ISWiB 2013

We are more than happy to announce that the next ISWiB will take place from 14th to 21st July 2013. This year, the International Student Week in Belgrade is going to be held for the 7th time.

The International Student Week in Belgrade (ISWiB)  is a one-week student festival which has been traditionally held every year since 2006 in the city of Belgrade, Serbia. The Festival is open for students from all universities in Europe. Every year, ISWiB gathers over 200 young people, including participants, moderators and volunteers.

The idea of the festival is binding young people through work in several different workshops created so that every workshop covers a significant field of our society which we live in. Through workshops, close communication and cooperation, interactive lectures and various open activities, students will be able to gain new knowledge and exchange ideas. Students will also have an opportunity to establish professional contacts with eminent professors and professionals from different sectors  and develop  and create new projects by themselves. The Festival has been traditionally organized by association World Youth Wave.

Theme

This year’s International Student Week in Belgrade will be directed towards the creation of an international youth network through which the participants will be able to continue to cooperate. The educational program will aim to raise the level of their knowledge in various fields, and through formal and informal meetings the participants will be able to connect with other young people who are also engaged in that field. Each workshop will have a concrete product of their work during the festival, either in the form of a project, recorded film, exhibition, etc. We want this year to bring together young people with ideas and help them hatch a concrete product; we will work together in order to hatch the network!

Young people are not just the future of the world nor does the world belong to them as it was often told. They are the present holders of the society as well as other groups, which is why it is important to work together, and for that you need a platform that will be hatched from this year’s ISWiB!

Eligibility

All European students and those from the other continents but studying in Europe at the moment can apply for ISWiB. All fields of study are welcome, there are no special requirements. Recently graduated students are also welcome.

Participation fee

The fee for foreign students is 100 Euros and it includes accommodation, food and workshop expenses. For domestic students, the fee is 40 Euros and it includes food and workshops expences. Students studying in Serbia have no accomodation provided during the festival.

Travel costs are not covered with the participation fee and ISWiB will not make any reimbursement of the costs.

The official language of ISWiB is English.

Accommodation

ISWiB participants will be accommodated in Petar Drapšin Student Dormitory.
