European Youth Media Days 2015

Media freedom is one of the cornerstones in the development of democratic societies in Europe and has become a constitutional guarantee in many European states since WWII as well as one of the fundamental rules in modern European Union. However, not all EU Member States score the best in media freedom watch and reports from ONG or human rights watchdogs, and media and journalists' liberties are an even more delicate issue in several EU neighbouring countries.

If these are topics that interest you, we invite you to apply to become one of the 77 young journalists, aged between 18 and 30, reporting from the European Parliament in Brussels between October 20 and 22, 2015.
The European Youth Media Days 2015 (which are organised by the European Parliament in collaboration with the European Youth Press – Network of young media makers), will focus on Media Freedom in Europe and beyond. The EYMD is one of the biggest events in Europe dedicated to young journalists.

Participants will experience three days of media workshops, political discussions, hands-on media production and invaluable insights into the European Parliament and international media milieu. They will interact with high-level European politicians, professional journalists and experts and engage in intercultural exchange through practical media production.

Over the course of the three-day workshop, each young journalist will work to produce a report on the topic of the seminar through their medium of choice - video, photo, radio, print, or multimedia. Participants at print, multimedia and photo workshops, furthermore, will have the chance to work in mixed groups and produce a 360° journalistic content. This year’s edition brings one more innovation: three participants will produce a short documentary movie about the whole event. The EYMD are open to young journalists who are citizens or legal residents of the EU Member States and neighbouring countries.

Costs – citizens or legal residents of the EU Members States
Participants’ travel costs (specific conditions apply, more information will be given after you have been selected) will be reimbursed by the European Parliament 1 to 2 weeks after the event, upon submission of all necessary documents (forms for completion and instructions will be sent by the European Parliament prior to the event). The European Parliament will also pay up to 360 Euros lump sum to working journalists (who need to provide a copy of their valid press card or a letter of instruction from their editor stating that they work as a paid journalist) or up to 180 Euros lump sum to journalism students or interns (who need to provide proof (e.g. in the form of a letter) from their university or from the organisation they are interning at) to cover accommodation, meals and local transport. The lump sums will be paid at the same time as the travel reimbursement, 1 to 2 weeks after the event.

Attention: for participants living in Brussels no lump sum or travel cost will be paid.

The young journalists chosen to participate will have to arrange their own accommodation and travel and provide the necessary documents to the European Parliament for reimbursement.

Costs – citizens or legal residents of the EU neighbouring countries
Participants’ travel costs (up to 250 Euros, specific conditions apply, more information will be given after you have been selected) will be reimbursed by the European Youth Press 2 weeks after the event, upon submission of all necessary documents (reimbursement form will be sent by the EYP prior to the event). The European Youth Press will also pay up to 250 Euros in total to team members involved in the project to cover accommodation and meals in Brussels. They need to provide originals of the corresponding documents (receipts, invoices) and EYP reimbursement form. The lump sums will be paid at the same time with the travel reimbursement, 2 weeks after the event. Participants will have to arrange their own travel. European Youth Press will assist with finding the accommodation in Brussels. Team members are responsible to provide the European Youth Press with all necessary documents requested for reimbursement.

Application and deadline
The call is open to young journalists aged between 18 and 30 who are citizens or legal residents of a EU Member State or neighbouring country only. The event will be held in English, so a working level of the language is required. Participants applying for the documentary workshop need to demonstrate experience in documentary filmmaking or video-reporting as well as to bring the camera and editing software (the movie has to be finished until December 22, 2015).

Please use this form to submit your application, including the links to two media samples (of any type; media samples that are not in English should have an English summary) by August 16, 23:59 CET.

Solidarity Academy 2014

The European Solidarity Centre and New Eastern Europe are pleased to invite you to the tenth edition of the Solidarity Academy which will be held in Gdańsk from 16th to 22nd November 2014. The Solidarity Academy is an international educational project aimed at maintaining and developing the tradition of the Solidarity Movement. Looking back at the social movement of Solidarity and the peaceful socio-political changes which took place both in Poland and throughout Eastern Europe, we can find an inspiration for solving problems in today’s world.

During the project, 15 young journalists will have an opportunity to expand their knowledge and learn skills necessary for the work of any young and ambitious journalist or a commentator/columnist who is not indifferent to issues such as geopolitics or liberation movements on both the global and the European scale. The aim of this year's Solidarity Academy is to raise awareness among young journalists about aspects of multiculturalism and solidarity with nations fighting for freedom as well as integrating young contributors to New Eastern Europe. The Solidarity Academy will help to create a space for journalists from different backgrounds to meet, share and exchange experiences and initiatives.

Workshops will be both theoretical and practical. Participants will have an opportunity to take part in shared activities but they will also be divided into smaller groups during the journalistic workshops and comfy groups. The result of the journalistic workshops will be the final publication and the debate/panel discussion - fully prepared by the participants with the support of experts. The working language of the Solidarity Academy is English.

One of the main goals of the project is to create a programme of Solidarity Academy Graduates which will allow the participants to maintain contact and engage together in other projects. That is why, this year, the former participants of previous editions of Solidarity Academy will participate in the workshops as facilitators and assistants.

Organizers cover the costs of travel (up to 800 zł/200 €) and the participants’ stay in Gdańsk.

Formerly the Ivy Scholars Program, our name change this year to Yale Young Global Scholars reflects the fact that our program has developed into one of the most selective and academically rigorous high school summer programs worldwide. The Yale Young Global Scholars Program brings the best of the academic and policy communities together in a scholarly learning environment. Due to the very large number of applicants, we do not accept applications from rising freshmen (grade 9) or sophomores (grade 10). While there is no formal minimum grade point average (GPA) requirement, applicants with less robust grades should demonstrate intellectual excellence and leadership in all other areas. Teacher and mentor recommendations, as well as student statements of interest, are very important parts of our admission decisions. Each of our Yale Young Global Scholars Program experiences are taught in English and all students who are non-native speakers of English should possess strong verbal and written communication skills in the English language.

Youth Encountering Environmental Human Rights

We invite you to apply for the study session “Youth Encountering Environmental Human Rights” (24.02.-02.03.2013) that will take place at the European Youth Centre in Budapest.

This study session aims to promote active youth participation in environmental human rights education and peaceful activism. We have prepared this activity for youth workers, educators, activists- anyone interested to explore the topic of environmental human rights, willing to share their histories of participation and learn new ways of engaging in local and global environmental matters.

“All over the world, people are experiencing the effects of ecosystem decline, from water shortages to fish kills and landslides on deforested slopes. The victims of environmental degradation tend to belong to more vulnerable sectors of the society —racial and ethnic minorities and the poor—who regularly carry a disproportionate burden of such abuse. Increasingly, many basic human rights are being placed at risk, as the right to health is affected by the contamination of resources, or the right to property and culture compromised by commercial intrusion into indigenous lands. Human rights activism presents a significant opportunity to address the human consequences of environmental degradation and can serve as a catalyst for inspiring ideas and action in the real world ”

IYNF finds it essential to empower young people to defend their rights and the rights of the communities that are affected by abuse of local ecosystems and climate change. We believe that human rights education plays an important role in exploring the interdependencies of rights and links between environmental degradation and human rights. Thus this course!

During this study session we also want to build a network of young people willing to multiply their knowledge and create follow-up initiatives and projects in the field of human rights education, environmental education, education for sustainable development and youth participation internationally and in their local communities.

Winter School On Federalism And Governance 2013

The Winter School on Federalism and Governance is a transnational project of the EURAC-Institute for Studies on Federalism and Regionalism, Bolzano/Bozen (Italy), the Faculty of Law and the School of Political Science and Sociology of the University of Innsbruck (Austria). Since its first edition 2010 it takes place under the auspices of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.

The upcoming edition 2013 focuses on “Federalism and Fundamental Rights”. Federalism, regionalism, devolution, autonomy and other forms of territorial division of power are key tools for effective and democratic governance. They are often used to address fundamental rights issues, mostly in an effort to better promote and protect them, but also, in some instances, to limit them. The Winter School 2013 aims at better understanding such link from a multi-disciplinary academic and practical perspective, providing in-depth analysis and practical knowledge of the problems, the solutions and the instruments available in this field.

The first week of the Winter School (4-8 February 2013) takes place at the Faculty of Law and at the School of Political Science and Sociology, Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck, Austria. The second week (11-15 February 2013) takes place at the Institute for Studies on Federalism and Regionalism, European Academy Bolzano/Bozen (EURAC), Italy.

The application is open to young researchers and academics, post-graduate or undergraduate students, civil servants from a local, regional or national government as well as employees of international organizations or NGOs.

Among others, the following issues will be addressed during the training:
  • To what extent is territorially differentiated protection of fundamental rights possible and even desirable?
  • What fundamental rights are best suited to be developed differently in different parts of a state’s territory?
  • What lessons can be learned from comparative practice?
  • How can territorial settings improve the protection of fundamental rights? What do the international standards and practice have to say in this regard?
