Gerda Henkel Fellowships 2017/2018

New Europe College, Institute for Advanced Study in the humanities and social sciences in Bucharest, Romania announces a Call for Applications for its newly launched GERDA HENKEL Fellowships. The program targets young researchers / academics working in the fields of humanities (in particular archaeology, art history, historical Islamic studies, history, history of law, history of science, prehistory and early history) from the following countries: Afghanistan, Belarus, China (only Tibet and Xinjiang Autonomous Regions), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Mongolia, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan.

NEC provides an attractive meeting and working place for scholars from all around the world who wish to pursue a meaningful project of their own while also meeting with peers from other disciplines. It supports its fellows by providing excellent conditions for their work and by establishing a strong and productive network among academics and intellectuals in the country and beyond. The institute has acquired a unique position in the region and has established itself as a research center of international reputation.

Fellows are entitled to:

• A monthly stipend of 750 € (tax free) to cover living expenses related to the stay in Bucharest;
• Accommodation in Bucharest, comprising living quarters and working space. The Fellows will also have free access to the NEC library and electronic resources/databases;
• Travel from the home country to Bucharest and back, visa and insurance costs (up to 1000 €);
• Research field trip abroad during the fellowship period – up to 1,500 € (a one-time allowance);
• Research expenses (100 € / month).

Candidates are welcome to apply with projects on topics of their choice for:

• One academic year: October 2017 – July 2018 (10 months);
• One term: October 2017 – February 2018 / March – July 2018 (5 months).

The selected Fellows are expected to take part in the weekly seminars at the institute together with all the other Romanian and international scholars present at NEC, and in other scientific events organized by the institute. Fellows have the opportunity to benefit from NEC’s widespread international research network and its high-quality guest lecturers program. The institute’s working languages are English, French, and German; a good command of English is required. Fellows are assisted in all practical matters concerning travel, residence, and research in Bucharest. Toward the end of their stay, they are required to document the outcomes of their work in a scholarly paper (in English, French, or German).

Eligibility:

Candidates must

• Hold a Ph.D. title in the fields of the historical humanities mentioned above;
• Be citizen of one of the above mentioned countries.

International research experience (participation in projects and refereed conferences) and publications in peer-reviewed academic editions are strong advantages.
Preference will be given to candidates below the age of 45, and to those who have not yet benefited from a Fellowship at NEC.

African Humanities Program

The African Humanities Program (AHP) seeks to reinvigorate the humanities in Africa through fellowship competitions and related activities in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, and Uganda. In partnership with the Carnegie Corporation of New York, which has generously provided funding, AHP offers African scholars an integrated set of opportunities to develop individual capacities and to promote formation of scholarly networks. The African Humanities Program supports the Carnegie Corporation’s efforts to develop and retain African academics at universities in Africa.

Goals of the African Humanities Program

• to encourage and enable the production of new knowledge and new directions for research
• to strengthen the capacity of early career researchers and faculty at African universities
• to build the field of humanities by establishing networks for scholarly communication across Africa and with Africanists worldwide.

Fellowship stipends allow recipients an academic year free from teaching and other duties for completion of the PhD dissertation, for revising the dissertation for publication, or for the first major research project after the PhD. Fellows are also eligible for additional benefits such as residential stays for writing, manuscript development workshops, and publication support.

Each Fellow may request a residential stay at an African institute for advanced study. Residencies have proved to be extremely popular and productive, granting Fellows time and space to concentrate on writing. Because residencies must be taken at an institute outside the home country, they foster international communication. Currently AHP Fellows may take residencies at six institutes from South Africa to Senegal, Ghana to Tanzania.

Fellows are invited to submit their manuscripts to the AHP Publications series, a collaboration with UNISA Press in Pretoria, South Africa. The rigorous development and peer-review process of AHP Publications is overseen by series co-editors, Kwesi Yankah, Central University College, Ghana, and Frederick Hendricks, Rhodes University, South Africa.

Fellows may apply to attend a Manuscript-Development Workshop to discuss their manuscripts with AHP mentors and other Fellows in a weeklong, intensive retreat. Many authors use these discussions to guide their final revisions before submitting manuscripts for publication.

Fellowship Details

• Applicants must be nationals and residents of a country in sub-Saharan Africa, with a current affiliation at an institution in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda.
• Funding is available for dissertation completion and for postdoctoral research and writing.
• Applicants for Dissertation-Completion Fellowships should be in the final year of writing the dissertation at a university in Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, or Uganda.
• Dissertation-Completion Fellowships are not available in South Africa.
• Applicants for Early Career Postdoctoral Fellowships must be working in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, or Uganda and must have completed the PhD no more than eight years ago.
• Projects must be in the humanities and must be carried out in sub-Saharan Africa. AHP fellowships may not be used for travel outside the continent.
• Completed applications must be submitted by November 2, 2016.

Facebook Fellowship Program

The Facebook Fellowship Program is designed to encourage and support promising doctoral students who are engaged in innovative and relevant research in areas related to computer science and engineering. Winners of the fellowship are entitled to receive two years of tuition and fees paid, a stipend of $37,000 each year, and up to $5,000 in conference travel support. Applications will be evaluated based on the strength of the student's research statement, publication record, and recommendation letters. While open to students in any year of PhD study, heavy emphasis on research and publication record favors students who are further along in their course of study.

2016 Yale World Fellows Program

Applications to the Yale World Fellows program are accepted from across sectors and around the world.  Each class of Fellows is a unique group: geographically balanced, and representative of a wide range of professions, talents, and perspectives. The 2016 Program will run from mid-August to mid-December. Fellows are expected to be in residence at Yale for the duration of the Program.

To be eligible, applicants must:

• be in the mid-career stage Fellows are at least five, and typically not more than twenty, years into their careers, with demonstrated work accomplishments, and a clear indication of future contributions and excellence.  The average age of a World Fellow is 39, though there is no minimum or maximum age limit.
• be fluent in English An excellent command of the English language is essential.

Jean Monnet Postdoctoral Fellowships 2016/17

The Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies (RSCAS) offers one-year Jean Monnet Fellowships (renewable for one more year) to scholars who have obtained their doctorate more than 5 years prior to the start of the fellowship, i.e. 1 September 2016 for the academic year 2016/17. The Fellowship programme is open to post-docs, tenure track academics and those wishing to spend their sabbatical at the Robert Schuman Centre. We invite you to become part of a lively and creative academic community. The Centre offers up to 20 Fellowships a year.

Jean Monnet Fellows are selected on the basis of a research proposal and of their CV. The research proposal should fit well with one of the Centre’s main research themes, programmes and projects. The three main research themes of the RSCAS are:

• Integration, Governance and Democracy;
• Regulating Markets and Governing Money; and
• 21st Century World Politics and Europe.

Jean Monnet Fellows are based at the RSCAS and associated with one of the Centre’s projects and programmes. They are expected to actively participate in the academic life of the Centre and to contribute to the activities of the project or programme they are associated with. They can take part in the activities of the EUI postdoctoral programme and are encouraged to collaborate with PhD students, other postdocs and EUI academic staff. 

Duration 

The fellowships are for the duration of one year (12 months from September to August).

In the case a fellow arrives after the beginning of September or leaves before the fellowship ends (i.e. before late July), the grant will be accordingly reduced.

Grant

The basic grant is € 2,500 per month. If the duration of the fellowship is less than 12 months, no grant will be paid for the month of August.

Successful applicants benefiting from other grants or salaries must disclose this to the EUI, as the amount of the fellowship will be fixed at a lower rate (minimum € 1,250 per month) depending on the additional income.

Eligibility

• The fellowships are open to candidates who have obtained their doctorate more than 5 years prior to the start of the fellowship on 1 September (to apply for 2016/17, the Ph.D. should have been awarded before 1 September 2011).
• Candidates of all nationalities are eligible for the Jean Monnet Fellowships.

Internships at Greenpeace International in Amsterdam

The Research Unit at Greenpeace International is offering a 6 month internship position. Research internships are based in Amsterdam, Netherlands as full-time positions (40 hours per week) for a fixed term of 6 months. This internship option is ongoing. Monitor, capture, filter and organize information and market intelligence into databases for briefs and reports to ensure strategic information is available for Greenpeace’s campaigns and projects. This role is very detail orientated, involves multiple concurrent daily deadlines and administrative tasks within the research unit.

Eligibility of candidates

Academic background in natural or social sciences (minimum of an equivalent Bachelors level) required. Masters, or higher, in natural or social sciences, with environmental focus, preferred.

Essential Skills/Qualifications:

• Strong knowledge of global environmental issues and motivation to achieve Greenpeace environmental campaign objectives

2013 John Smith Fellowship Programme

The John Smith Memorial Trust is now accepting applications for its 2013 Fellowship Programme. 

The Fellowship aims to strengthen and deepen awareness of good governance through a three week programme in the UK and placements that show the workings of organisations within a long established democracy. Selection is based on a combination of the leadership potential of the applicant and the quality of the action plan they propose. Action plans are pieces of work or policy problems which the Fellows want to explore while in the UK. The Programme targets outstanding young leaders in politics, local government or civil society with an established interest in promoting democratic reform. The "ideal" candidate will be aged 25-40, working in politics, local administration, business, the media, the arts or civil society.

The aim of the Fellowship Programme is not to be a short-term scholarship, but a life-changing experience which brings new perspectives, long-term friendships, and a lifetime commitment to good governance.

Applications for Fellowships are invited from the following countries only: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.
